Sitting up in bed slowly, the lithe body under the sheet stretched a little. Even after balancing her weight on her hands, she struggled to wake up. She had to get in the shower and hit the road. Her bus would be arriving in under three hours. Pressing the palms of her hands against her eyes, she groaned loudly. Pulling herself out of bed, she nearly tripped over her own feet. Snorting lightly, she stumbled to the shower, stubbing her right big toe on the way through the doorway. Climbing into the shower with her eyes still mostly shut, she turned on the water. Going to bed without clothing had its benefits.

A half hour later, she was scrambling out the door at top speed. She was heading downtown for an interview and did not need to run her motorcycle down there. Erika hated navigating the traffic in Washington, DC. Especially when she had to get through rush hour traffic. She dressed as she normally would have, a light jacket with baggy pants and her favorite pair of boots. Now she found herself racing down the sidewalk to catch the bus. It was so strange…to have to focus on slowing down. She caught her bus though. As she sat near the back, she thought about the past eight months.

…She had emerged from the bender to end all benders, beer, vodka, men…women and whatever else walked through the door. She’d been burning the candle on both ends for a few weeks. Running herself ragged during the daytime, nighttime… in back alleys and public parks. Erika had been screwing so much and so violently that when she finally snapped out of it, she was sore for the next week.

A text message, a really simple one…from someone she used to be very close friends with arrived the next day. At the time, she’d been soaking her lower half in the coldest water she could stand. She wanted to delete the message, honestly…and sink back into the hedonistic delights she’d been enjoying. Though her body was protesting anymore antics under the sheets. When reflecting over her actions, Erika knew that she was just trying to drown her mind in senseless pleasures for a while. She looked at the text message over and over.

An opportunity to get away. Away from hanging out in Dupont too often with the wrong crowd. Away from being lured to the temptations of Southeast DC. This was a chance to move, but she was going to have to wait until she cleaned herself up. The fact alone she was staying in Motel 6 or Days Inn wasting her time in flesh was a sign that she had a problem. She was trying to bury her anxiety in something not exactly wise. Two weeks later, she found herself in the hospital getting an STD test. She knew how unsafe it was in DC to do what she had been…

And now eight months since being infected, she was still riding the high of a clean bill of health. Erika hadn’t allowed her circumstances to drag her down again. She had hopped off one bus to board another and was now only a half mile from her goal. A new chance, a new opportunity. A job offered in New York of all places…but she had to interview to get the chance to go to New York. She wasn’t going to pass it up. She couldn’t…

Stepping off the bus, she walked towards the stairs and her future.
