    November 14, 7 AM.

There's something about the sound of a fire. It's at once soothing and inherently dangerous.

Johann sat in the back of his shop in the Harbor district of NYC, poking at the embers of a forge fire with his tail. He was bored. No one wanted cool things anymore. It was all "make me an unbreaking knife, or "can you make this shield catch on fire?" Gimmicks. Nothing worthy of a dragon's craftsmanship.

There were plenty of humans who could do just fine jobs on those enchatments, and they certainly weren't irrational requests. Johann just couldn't shake the feeling of wanting to stretch his artistic and magical talents. He was stoking the fire to get it hot enough to start melting a metal instantly. The hotter the melt, the more readily it accepted his mana. The first few moments are crucial, he'd found. It was like imprinting with animals. The first stream of mana a metal encounters will be the one for which it has greatest affinity until it is reworked.

Once he got a melt started, and the claiming magics in place, Johann could step away from his forge and get back to the front of the shop. It was nearly time to open, anyway, and he was the only one in the shop.

Johann worked alone. It was easier that way. No distractions in the back. He'd hired one or two salespeople who traded off days of the week. Krishan was due in around 8 to open, and HOLY FUCK it was cold. The fire had died more than ten minutes ago, and he'd been poking embers. He'd been hoping not to have to re-light the forge, but at least people would appreciate the residual warmth.

Johann re-lit the pilot flame and stepped away, closing the door. It would take some time to re-heat the forge. Especially with the sub-freezing temperatures and inches of snow outside. Johann could feel it, and fuck was it cold. He shifted back into his human form, as the fire wouldn't be nearly hot enough to use for working anything until noon at the very earliest. Tea sounded absolutely fantastic right about then, so he poured some water into one of those little electric kettles that he kept behind the sales counter for people to come in and view.

The little dragon took great pride in his shop: 90% of the items in it were made in the back. The other 10% were things he'd brought in from various other blacksmiths around the city and some exceptional items were things he'd had brought in from around the country and even the rest of the world. Each one was resting on its own little stand with a placard naming the metal, setting material, and forge of origin. Any powers or price inquiries were to be answered by either Johann himself or one of his associates.

Johann sat back and resigned himself to waiting. He admired the walls, covered in hanging swords and shields he'd produced on the forge. No naked eye could tell which held powers beyond human imagination, and which were simply shaped hunks of metal, but Johann knew every blade and shield like he knew his own scales.

It was 7:45, and Krishan would be about 10 minutes away. The shop would open, and Johann silently cursed himself for not making a shovel earlier. Goddamnit. Why did Earth have to be so cold in November?
