Kelan stepped through the small, chain-link gate with a smile on his face. Turning around, he looked over they heads of the quartet of guards that had escorted him across the prison yard. In the distance, he could see the administration building. The smile spread, almost from ear to ear, as Kelan raised both his hands in the air, firing off single-digit salutes towards the building. "Thank you, Fort Carson, it's been a blast."
The guards just shook their heads. The youngest of them, Jimmy, called out through the fence, "Stay out of trouble, Bishop. You're in for the big house now, not this cushy little retirement home in Colorado, if you don't."
With a grunt, Kelan lowered his hands and stared hard at Jimmy, who was barely older than he was. "Yeah, yeah. If it comes to it, I'll handle it, Jimmy. Ain't a single motherfucker in that joint that could take me alone, you know that. Thanks for the warning, though. Best make sure you get home right-aways after your shift. I might be bangin' that pretty wife of yours tonight, if you're late." He winked, and turned on his heel as the other guards put their hands on Jimmy to keep the screaming young man from coming through the gate.
"Four years. Four fucking years, I spent locked up in Fort Carson," Kelan said quietly to himself as he walked away. "Well, it's better than if I'd gotten caught for forgery, and beating the piss out of that guy for saying my papers were bad. Asshole. My papers aren't bad. They're fucking -good-. Works of art."
Hiking his nearly empty rucksack onto his shoulder and kicking a rock with his right boot, Kelan smiled and started walking in a westerly direction. California, he thought. I can make a new start there. Forge the papers I need to start a new life. New name. New everything....What should I do, though? I need -something- that's somewhat legit, until I can get a clientele established.
The smile slightly faded but still visible, Kelan nodded his head. His left arm extended, thumb out, he started hitching his way to California and the fresh start he was looking for...
